Recent studies have come out suggesting that high protein and low carbohydrate diets reduce life span. It has been all over the media in the past couple of days and online in the recent months.
There have been two studies that have found that diets that are high in protein like meat and cheese, especially when eaten in middle age, might shorten peoples life spans even though it will help lose weight in the short term.
One of the studies suggest that even though having excess protein in younger people (up to middle age) can shorten lifespan, having higher protein intake in the elderly is beneficial for their health.
Both studies are published in Cell Metabolism Journal which is available online to view for free:

In my opinion its about time studies like this is being done. My view has always been that extreme eating whether its over eating or extreme dieting is not good for health and can shorten life span. These studies confirms this.
A balanced diet and being active is the best way to be healthy. Everyone is different and has different dietary needs, but balance in the diet should be done in all types of diets and lifestyles.
