You are sitting at the dinner table staring at your dinner and a thought goes through your mind " Not this meal again." This scenario plays in everyones head at one stage of their healthy eating program. Having the same foods week in week out can indeed get boring. 
One of the reasons why diets may fail is not enough variety. Lets face it, having the same meals week in week out can get boring and all of a sudden the forbidden foods start to look good. Before you know it, you find yourself waiting in line of your local fast food restaurant. 

So what is the cure for this Boring Diet Syndrome? Variety .... 

Trying different healthy recipes and changing what you eat can add excitement and stop you from visiting your local take away restaurant. 

Any type of meal can be made healthier (even curries, pizzas, burgers and the good old fish and chips can be made healthy at home). This can add variety to your food.

Tips on including variety to your diet include: 

  • Trying different recipes: Experimenting with food and different recipes can be relaxing after a busy week. If there is leftovers freeze it in containers and you have meals ready for you during the week when life gets busy.
  • Having a variety of fruit and vegetables: variety of vegetables and fruit can add different flavours and textures to the diet which will be appealing to the taste buds. Having a variety also adds vitamins and minerals. 
  • Have a variety of proteins: Having the same everyday can get boring. There is only so much chicken that you can have in a week. Have different lean cuts of meat like lamb, beef, lean pork, and having fish can add variety. If you are vegetarian (or wanting meat free days) having tofu and different types of pulses, nuts and seeds also add variety (and nutrition) to the diet
  • Allow a once a week treat: Having a cheat meal can help stay on tract with your diet. Not having the cheat can actually do the opposite and can lead to breaking the diet. (I learned this the hard way) However dont over do it, have a cheat meal not a cheat weekend. That can undo all the good work you did during the week. 
  • Add spices to your food: Adding spices like garlic, pepper, turmeric, cinnamon, and herbs can add a lift and flavour to your meals without adding salt. 
These tips may help add variety and prevent form getting bored from your diet. Remember variety is the spice of life.
