Its a hot summers night and the house isnt much cooler. In order to get out of the hot house it was decided that dinner out was the best option.

The fact that it wasnt a cheat night I carefully read the menu and got a meal which was low in fat, low carb and delicious. I ended up getting a grilled chicken salad. When it came to the table it was just that a big bowl of salad with grilled chicken and balsamic dressing.

So how did i read the menu and actually know what meal would be a healthier option?

There are a number of tips and tricks when it comes to eating out and here are a few options, especially if itt not your cheat meal.


  • The first trick to this is read the key words like grilled, fried, saute, stir fry, it will give you an indication on how the food is cooked. 


  • Also read the description and what is in the meal. For example originally i was going to choose smoked salmon salad, sounds healthy right? and it normally is but there was one ingredient that was listed that isnt and that was sour cream.  


  • Another tip to consider is any meal that you order has sauces or dressings, ask for the dressing on the side that way you can control how much you put on there.
  • choosing a restaurant is another thing to consider. If possible, choose a place where there are healthy options and dont go to fast food restaurants even if itt a cheat meal. There are high levels of sugar, saturated fats and trans fats which is not good for your health. 

If its your cheat meal this doesnt matter, choose whatever you want and enjoy the meal. However if it isnt your cheat meal, and you are going out to eat, these tricks are useful to ensue your meal isnt as fattening. At the end of the day unless you ask you dont fully know what you are eating, the amount of butter used etc but these tips do help.

A rule of thumb to any meal is what goes on your plate. This diagram is a great way to see what should be on your plate every meal.


These tips will help you with your weight loss journey when it comes to eating out. One last tip to think of is always aim for a rainbow plate not a cream one.
